Hardback book printing offers premium quality and durability. Ideal for limited editions, yearbooks, and coffee table books, our casebound options are available for both small and large orders, providing a stylish, lasting impression with a sophisticated, high-end look.
How are hardback books made?
Case binding involves printing and wrapping the front and back cover around a greyboard to create the ‘case’ or hardback of your book. The inner pages are bound together using a strong PUR (Polyurethane Reactive) adhesive. White endpapers and fly sheets are then inserted; the unprinted endpapers are glued to the case on the front and back, while the blank fly sheets are placed just before and after your printed pages.
Whether you're printing corporate documents, a school leavers’ yearbook, or an exclusive limited edition publication, our casebound books cater to a wide range of needs.

What is a hardback book?
A hardback book (also called a hardcover or case-bound book) is a type of book that has a rigid, durable cover rather than a flexible paper cover. Key features of a hardback book include a solid cover made from thick board, wrapped in printed paper. The use case binding, which is where the inside pages are glued or stitched together, and then attached to the hard cover. They are more durable than a paperback, making them ideal for books that need to last longer or feel more premium. We see hardback books picked most often for first or limited editions, coffee table books, children’s books and premium publications. In this way, they are suitable for a wide range of book styles.
For optimal protection, we recommend adding lamination, particularly for covers with heavy ink coverage. Lamination helps prevent ink transfer or marks caused by friction during transit or storage. You can choose from three finishes: Matt, or Gloss, each providing a durable layer of protection for your design. For more information, check our blog: Which lamination should I use for my print?

Hardback Book Printing FAQs
A hardback book has a sturdy, rigid cover wrapped around a tough board (case), with the inner pages glued in place for a premium, durable finish. Perfect for yearbooks, corporate reports, coffee table books, and special editions.
Wraparound areas are extra margins on the cover spread that extend background elements and graphics so they visually wrap around the hardcover case without gaps after finishing.
No. Flysheets and endpapers (blank sheets inserted before and after your printed content) cannot be customised or printed on; they are automatically added in production.
The slug in book printing terms refers to the area outside the trim and bleed that contains non-printing information for the printer. This is where you’d see fold marks, crop marks, colour bars, or other registration details that help with accurate printing and finishing. The slug will not be printed, it is not meant to form part of the book print.
The Hinge is the area next to the spine of a hardback book. It’s the narrow area on the cover where the outer case bends when you open the book. It sits just inside the spine on both the front and back covers.
It works like a small flexible zone that allows the rigid board cover to open and close smoothly. Because this area flexes, designers should keep text, logos and important graphics away from the hinge so they don’t disappear into the fold or become distorted during binding.
Submit a CMYK PDF at 300 dpi, include 3 mm bleed, maintain recommended safe margins (e.g., at least 10 mm inside edges), and ensure fonts are embedded or outlined. For the outers please refer to our templates and guides as to how best to set up the outers incorporating the spine width. For the inners please submit this as a single PDF, running in page order, adhering to any safe margins and bleed requirements.
Hardback covers can be laminated with gloss or matt for protection and better visual appeal, which also helps withstand handling and transit.
Hardback books are typically available in sizes like A5, A4, and square formats with page counts from around 40 to 400 pages.
Yes. The spine width depends on your total page count and paper weight, we provide a spine calculator on the product page above to help you size the cover correctly depending on the number of pages you choose.
No. The unprinted endpapers and fly sheets are automatically inserted during production and should not be included in your uploaded files.
The gutter is the inner margin where the pages meet at the spine. This space is crucial to ensure that text and important design elements do not get lost in the binding.
Provide two separate PDF files: one for the cover artwork as a single spread (including front cover, spine, back cover, hinge, and wraparound areas) and one for your inner pages in running sequence.
Yes. Leave important text and graphics clear of the gutter and hinge area so they don’t get lost in the binding.
Our file check service automatically checks things like slug and wraparound for hardback books as part of their quality review so you can fix issues before printing. Our File check service is free. Alternatively, you can request “File Assist” as your artwork service at an additional cost, where your file will be thoroughly checked and fixed before it goes to print.
