A half-fold leaflet is one sheet folded once down the middle. That gives you four panels: a front cover, a two-page spread inside and a back cover. You'll also see it called a bi-fold or 4-pp leaflet. Our default is an A3 sheet that folds to A4, printed on both sides.

They work well when your content needs a spread. Restaurants, cafés and bars use them for menus, with starters on the left and mains on the right. Venues use them for event programmes, estate agents for property details, and churches and funeral directors for very simple orders of service. The front is a prime position for an introduction, photo, promotion or logo placement; the back panel is a natural home for a map, opening hours or contact details.

This can happen if your artwork has a solid-colour background or dark images running over the fold line. The ink may split where the paper bends. For designs like that, we recommend laminated leaflets, which protect the ink across the crease. Light or white backgrounds at the fold rarely cause problems.

If you have more than four pages of content, you'll find a half-fold isn't big enough. A saddle-stitched booklet can give you eight pages or more. If you only have a single message, such as an offer or an opening date, a flat flyer costs less and gets read faster.

Choose a half-fold if you want a wide inside spread for photos, a menu or a price list. Alternatively, pick a Roll Folded Leaflet, which folds twice into six narrow panels, so it suits step-by-step content and fits DL racks and envelopes.

Put simply, if your copy reads as a sequence, choose roll fold. If it needs one open view, choose half-fold.

An A4 folded leaflet (A3 flat) fits a C4 envelope, and an A5 folded leaflet fits a C5. If you need to post in a DL envelope, choose a roll fold or Z fold of A4.
