Spot UV is a clear, glossy coating printed on selected parts of a card, such as a logo, pattern, or line of text. On our spot UV business cards, it sits on top of matte lamination, so the shiny areas stand out against the flat finish around them. People notice it when they tilt the card or run a thumb across it.

Spot UV looks its best on bold, solid shapes:
A logo on a dark matte background
A large pattern across the back of the card
A single word or icon you want people to notice first
Avoid small text and fine lines. The coating can land up to 0.5mm either side of where it’s placed, so fine detail can look blurred. Keep it away from the edges of the card too, for a cleaner result.
Spot UV needs its own artwork page alongside your printed design. On that page, draw solid shapes wherever you want the gloss to appear, in exactly the same position as on the design. Colour every shape in pure 100% black, with no cyan, magenta or yellow mixed in. Vector shapes give the cleanest edges.
The coating is applied in a similar way to screen printing and can land up to about 0.5mm either side of its position. So keep small text and fine lines out of the spot UV layer, because the gloss may not line up exactly with them.
The rest of the file follows our usual card setup:
Size: 91mm x 61mm, which is the 85mm x 55mm card plus 3mm bleed on every side.
Margins: important content at least 3mm from the edge, or 5mm if your design has a border.
File: a CMYK PDF at 300dpi, with fonts outlined or embedded.
Choose spot UV if you want contrast between gloss and matt within your own colours. Choose Foiled Business Cards if you want a metallic shine such as gold or silver. Spot UV is the quieter of the two: it catches the light without changing the colour of your design.
